Exit with Integrity: Ending Your Coaching Contract Positively

So, you've received the news that your coaching contract isn't being renewed.  Now what?

We’ve been through this, and it can certainly stir some emotions, ranging from excitement for a new chapter to anxiety and sadness about closing the old chapter. Either way, change means we have some work to do, so let's focus on how you can continue to make a positive impact in your remaining time and ensure a smooth transition for your colleagues.

Prioritizing Your Impact and Solidifying Resources

During these final weeks, your focus should be on maximizing the positive impact you have had and can still have. Take stock of your ongoing projects and identify which ones you can bring to a meaningful and sustainable close. Resist the urge to spread yourself too thin with new initiatives – this will be hard. Rather, channel your energy into solidifying the work you've already started.

Think strategically about the resources you've developed or curated throughout the year. What tools, templates, or guides have been invaluable for teachers? Now is the time to refine these and ensure they are easily accessible for future use. Consider organizing them in a shared drive or a dedicated platform. Your goal:  Leave behind a helpful toolkit that empowers teachers to continue their growth and development.

Creating a Robust Knowledge Bridge

Beyond simply sharing existing resources, think about how you can actively transfer the invaluable knowledge and insights you've gained during your time in this role. This is where creating a "knowledge bridge" becomes crucial. Consider documenting key processes you've championed, successful strategies you've observed in classrooms, or even common challenges and effective solutions you've encountered.

Consider creating concise "how-to" guides for initiatives you've led, like implementing a new feedback protocol or facilitating collaborative planning. Summarize key takeaways from professional development sessions you've facilitated. If you've developed specific rubrics or observation protocols, ensure these are documented and explained.

You’ve likely formed many relationships throughout your coaching placement.  Make a deliberate effort to connect with each of the teachers you've had the privilege to work alongside. These conversations don't need to be lengthy, but a genuine check-in, a word of encouragement, or a brief reflection on your shared work can be incredibly meaningful. Take the time to acknowledge their dedication and the progress you've witnessed.

Take it to the next level and consider the power of a personal touch. Writing individual notes to teachers expressing your gratitude for their willingness to learn, their commitment to their students, and the opportunity you've had to collaborate with them can leave a lasting positive impression. It's a powerful way to acknowledge the human connection you've built and to offer sincere appreciation for their partnership.
